Versatile basis for future-proof concrete structures

Concrete repair of Geertruidenberg cooling tower resumed

The concrete repair of the cooling tower in Geertruidenberg is being carried out by Balm not only at a great height, the project also highlights the company's versatility. Operating from Vianen, the company has focused on repairing, restoring, reinforcing and protecting a variety of concrete structures for more than 60 years. In all formats, throughout the Netherlands and increasingly with the concept of sustainability in mind.

Since 1962, Balm has developed into a true specialist in strengthening and renovating existing concrete structures. Both internally and externally. In non-residential construction, residential construction and civil engineering. As a subcontractor, but also as a main contractor. "The functions of buildings and architectural structures can change over time," explains general manager Dennis Visser. "Just like quality requirements, legislation and standards. Aspects that often have major consequences for the load on buildings and structures. In that specific area we like to show our experience and expertise."

Focus on sustainability

Balm does so with a keen eye for the longer term and increasingly with sustainability as its starting point. As a result, more and more assignments are coming along for the certified company. Especially around the transformation and reuse of office buildings into residential units. "Beautiful works to which we increasingly contribute by changing the structural properties of constructions," Visser continues. "Look, in principle, such a structure is designed and built for office use. If the designated use changes to residential, this also has consequences for the physical building itself. Consider, for example, the installation of balconies, elevator shafts and stairwells. We have everything we need to reinforce the concrete with various systems and techniques, such as carbon adhesive reinforcement and tension cables. A specialty that we have completely mastered. And the goal is always the same: to strengthen the concrete structure so that its useful life is extended by many years."

Nationally active

Balm's professionals are proving their worth throughout the Netherlands. For example, the company is currently involved in the renovation of the Central Station in The Hague. In addition, Balm is taking part in a renovation program initiated by the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, which involves the renovation of hundreds of artworks throughout the country over the next few years. So there is plenty of work for Balm's 60 or so employees. One example is the concrete repair of the cooling tower in Geertruidenberg, where the second phase recently started. An extensive project that Balm describes on its website as "traditional concrete repair in a unique location and at a very high altitude. "As a result of corroding steel due to the low concrete coverage, the concrete is printed on the surface of the tower," Visser explains of the job. "This not only makes for a less strong structure, there is also the danger of concrete parts falling down. We use suspended structures where our personnel are individually fused to work safely and to sustainably restore the tower so that it can be used again for years to come. A great challenge which, by the way, we had to cut into two parts due to a breeding pair of peregrine falcons on top of the tower. A remarkable bonus during an equally special project."
