Sustainable concrete repair

"Too often the focus is still on repairing the visual damage," Van den Wyngaert observes. "While a good design of a repair solution additionally takes into account additional protection of concrete and reinforcement. Thereby, the protection should be primarily in function of the environmental conditions." Master Builder Solutions therefore developed a Life Cycle Cost model, which, based on project information and product characteristics, makes a cost comparison between repair and protection, versus repair alone. "This report shows that every euro invested in protection will save as much as 3 to 5 euros in recurring repair costs and that appropriate protection eliminates an average of three repair cycles within the life of the structure." Sustainability at Master Builders Solutions equates to the life of the product. "To extend that life, the exposed reinforcement must be treated with corrosion protection, then the concrete can be repaired with repair mortars. Finally, an appropriate protection system must be applied. Our products are developed to be as performant as possible with a view to the longest possible service life. Every delayed repair cycle is thus also a gain for the environment."

Certification, safety and support

According to Van den Wyngaert, three elements are crucial when choosing materials. "Certification, safety and support. CE marking according to EN 1504 should be the starting point for the choice of materials," he believes. "Furthermore, we should not only look at materials with the highest compressive strength, the best adhesion or the best waterproofing, -because if they meet the certification requirements for the application, that's basically enough-, but we also look at other factors that have a big impact on durability and investment costs. These include ease of use and how efficiently the material can be applied by applicators. In addition, human and environmental safety also plays an increasingly important role," according to Van den Wyngaert. "Third and last consideration, but certainly not unimportant in material selection, is the supplier itself. Can they provide technical support? What guarantees are offered, what is the service like? All points that can make a significant difference in achieving a sustainable concrete repair."

Consultancy

"We are constantly perfecting our solutions in construction chemistry," says Van den Wyngaert. "We like to do that in consultation with our clients. Actually, we are more consultants than just developer and supplier. When clients come to us with a complex problem, we look for a customized solution and then offer the right products on top of that. Incidentally, the very best products are only useful if they are also applied correctly. For that reason, we prefer to work with approved applicators so that the application is also done properly."
