Cemex and Ecocem, two leading companies in the construction sector in Europe, today announced a collaboration aimed at researching and developing low-carbon building solutions. Starting in June 2023, they will make joint efforts to test and implement these low-carbon techniques, starting in France.
This partnership builds on a pre-existing relationship, with Ecocem supplying raw materials to Cemex France for many years. The renewed partnership will focus on the use of low-CO2 cement in Cemex's concrete production, in line with Cemex's European ambition to reduce CO2 emissions from all its activities by 55% by 2030.
The partnership will begin testing the low-carbon solutions at ten of Cemex's French readymix production sites. The ambition is to expand these initiatives further in France and possibly other countries in the future. The partnership with Ecocem is an integral part of Cemex's "Future in Action" sustainability strategy.
Michel Andre, Vice President of Building Materials Western Europe and President of Cemex France, emphasizes the importance of the partnership: "With this expanded partnership with Ecocem, Cemex confirms its commitment to strengthening its sustainability agenda. Our ambition to be a net-zero enterprise by 2050 requires us to prioritize innovation and new technologies. Our roadmap to a 1.5˚ C scenario has now been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and further emphasizes our commitment to more sustainable operations, products and solutions."
Donal O'Riain, founder and managing director of Ecocem, added: "Cemex has been a key partner since our launch in France. By joining forces, we can make significant progress in delivering low-carbon cement for use in concrete with a much lower carbon footprint. Only through partnerships like this will we make the progress needed to meet global climate goals."
