The ION Borghardt Award 2024 has nominated four innovative companies for their outstanding contributions to sustainability, efficiency and technological advancement within the surface treatment industry. The nominees are Chemetall, AD Chemicals i.c.w. WeCoat and Rotocoat, Kamp Coating i.c.w. Railtechniek Van Herwijnen and Straalbedrijf Colijn. Below is a brief description of their entries:
Submission: Gardo Vision
Chemetall has developed Gardo Vision, a software tool that allows complete simulations of pretreatment lines, including energy, water and product consumption. This tool provides insight into the impact of sustainability changes, including the carbon footprint. This helps companies achieve more efficient and sustainable production processes.
Submission: innovation in wastewater reduction and chemical recycling
AD Chemicals is working with WeCoat and Rotocoat on innovative solutions to reduce wastewater and chemistry in zinc and coating processes. This collaboration has led to reductions in energy consumption and improved equipment protection. These innovations help the industry meet increasingly stringent environmental standards and contribute to the 2030 climate goals.
Submission: Drop Section Immersion System
Kamp Coating, in cooperation with Railtechniek Van Herwijnen, is introducing the Drop Section Dipping System, which saves energy by increasing efficiency in the pretreatment process. Traverses can be treated faster and in multiple baths simultaneously, leading to increased productivity and a smaller carbon footprint.
Submission: renewable energy and efficient blasting processes
Jet company Colijn has invested in 900 solar panels and uses heat from compressors for floor heating, reducing gas consumption. Starting in August, they are switching to water-based coatings, with an expected 50% reduction in VOC emissions. Their new blast cabinet allows for reuse of steel grit and corundum, reducing disposal costs. They are also exploring the installation of wind turbines for further sustainability. These initiatives demonstrate their strong commitment to innovation and sustainability in the blasting and coating industry.
These companies each demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and innovation in their respective sectors, competing for the prestigious ION Borghardt Award, presented to the most progressive initiative within the surface treatment industry.
The winner of the ION Borghardt Award will be announced and honored on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 during the Day of Surface Technology at the Sustainability Factory in Dordrecht. During this event, where recordings will be made for SBS6's TV program Doe maar duurzaam, the most pioneering contribution within the surface treatment industry will be awarded.
