Innovative manufacturing process makes concrete more environmentally friendly
Heidelberg Materials is launching its updated EcoCrete® concrete with a certified CO₂ reduction of up to 70%. The company, currently still known as Mebin, previously demonstrated with the first version of EcoCrete® that it continues to contribute transparently to making the construction industry more sustainable.
The CO₂ reduction per cubic meter of concrete is up to 70% for EcoCrete® compared to the reference value of the concrete industry worldwide. The significant CO₂ reduction is the result of an innovative production process that uses alternative fuel and raw materials, as well as recycled water and the full reuse of both residual concrete and (concrete) demolition material. Furthermore, when primary gravel is replaced 100% with recycled aggregates, this can lead to an additional CO₂ reduction of 11%.
Bas Pije, general manager concrete business Heidelberg Materials in the Netherlands, "At Heidelberg Materials, we are committed to locally produced, CO₂-optimized building materials that push the boundaries of what is technically feasible in terms of sustainability today." "The Concrete Accord stipulated that by 2030 at least 30% of primary material should be replaced with secondary, recycled material. Today, considering all our products, we are replacing 10% of primary material with recycled material. Our EcoCrete®, in which we use up to 100% of recycled aggregates, allows us to further increase this percentage in the future. Our cements and concrete types are constantly being further developed to reduce the ecological footprint even further in the future - over the entire life cycle. In this way, together with customers, we are ensuring that construction becomes more sustainable."
Heidelberg Materials is a world leader in the development and application of innovative technologies for carbon capture and utilization in the building materials industry. And with its increasing involvement in concrete recycling, the company is contributing to the circular economy. Heidelberg Materials has set itself the goal of reducing its CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2025 compared to the reference year 1990 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest.
Since 2017, Mebin has held the Gold CSC (Concrete Sustainability Council) certificate for all its plants, recognizing the environmentally, socially and economically responsible way the company procures and produces concrete.
