SSAB is known for collaborating with innovative and award-winning architects committed to creating sustainable buildings. A recent example is KOKO architects and their redesign of the Baltic Station Market in Tallinn, Estonia. The project with a roof made of sustainable GreenCoat® prepainted steel from SSAB has been nominated for the 2018 World Architecture Festival (WAF) Award in the "Old and New" category.
The new sawtooth roof is made with long fascia strips of durable GreenCoat® prepainted steel. The roof acts as a unique, central element, highlighting the building's sustainable perspective while creating a contemporary and versatile market building. The GreenCoat® prepainted steel product contains a Bio-based Technology (BT) coating in which much of the fossil oil traditionally used has been replaced with a plant-based alternative. This patented coating technology is currently unique in the market.
"The sawtooth roof is specific because of the size and large surface area needed to withstand heavy storms, heavy rainfall and the load of snow that accumulates in winter - all without additional maintenance. In addition, it was very important to us that the material be produced in a sustainable manner. This led us to select GreenCoat® choosing steel as the most suitable material," explained KOKO architects partner Andrus Köresaar.
During the construction process, GreenCoat® praised for its easy handling and low thermal expansion, which helped maintain its cool lines. The Mountain Grey color was chosen from a wide color library and helped create a look that harmonizes with the many other materials used in the new building.

In recognition of its unique design, Baltic Station Market was nominated for the 2018 World Architecture Festival (WAF) Award in the 'Old and New' category. The building was also awarded the 2017 Construction of the Year Award from the Estonian Association of Architectural and Consulting Engineering Companies (EAACEC).
