thermoplastic powder coating with special properties

Developments in the world of coatings are rapid. A striking example of this is Abcite®. This thermoplastic powder coating was already widely used in the drinking water industry. Because of its strong properties - including durability - we now see the coating being used in other markets as well.

How powerful the protection of Abcite® too, its application is actually remarkably simple. Abcite® is applied in one coat and then immediately performs its highly anti-corrosion action. It is a product of EUROLACKE, which represents producer Axalta in the Netherlands. John Theewis, director of EUROLACKE, sees great opportunities for Abcite®. Not only because of its high protection against corrosion; also the impact, scratch and wear resistance, UV and weather resistance, chemical resistance and electrical insulation of Abcite® are of a high standard. Abcite® achieved multiple quality labels.

Plastic

"The coating is applied to a warm surface," Theewis says. "The powder melts onto the object, so to speak. This creates the high corrosion resistance and strong adhesion to the substrate. The paint is also plastic; it bends with the surface if something happens to it. That makes it resistant to mechanical stresses such as bending, impacts and scratches."

Short lead time

Abcite® is applied directly to the blasted surface to be protected. All that needs to be done is to heat the object. Theewis: "Of course it takes time to warm up the object. There are clear instructions for this. Moreover, you win that time back. The product is so powerful that the highest standard of corrosion protection is achieved with one coat. The paint is immediately dry and requires no post-treatment."

Features and references

Abcite® contains no solvents or hazardous substances. This ensures that Abcite® is already widely used, such as in the drinking water industry, swimming pools, perfume panels (on the coast), fencing, military vehicles, cable ducts, shipbuilding, fishing, offshore and street furniture. In short, under severe conditions and in places where protection against corrosion, mechanical stress and/or chemical influences is important.

Side cover

"One feature not yet mentioned is the excellent edge coverage," Theewis concludes. "This was highlighted on an intensively used pool staircase with sharp, round holes in it. Even after prolonged use, the Abcite®-layer intact."
